Great books make great gifts and the new Chapel Hill Public Library is getting a major gift of new books … even before the expanded library opens.
At the Chapel Hill Town Council meeting on June 11, Foundation President George Cianciolo and Executive Director Melissa Cain made a special presentation of a $150,000 grant earmarked for the Chapel Hill Public Library Opening Day Collection.
This gift will help to ensure that the Chapel Hill Public Library can purchase a wide range of exciting new materials that will be on the shelves and ready for check-out when the renovated and expanded Library opens its doors in the spring of 2013.
The community is invited to provide contributions and match the grant amount as part of the effort to fill the shelves when the expanded library opens. Providing the funds well in advance of the Library’s scheduled opening allows our librarians the advance time necessary to select and order books and other materials in order that they are available for check-out by the large number of visitors expected on opening day.
The Foundation has been soliciting donations through its Ensuring Excellence Campaign in order to fund library acquisitions and programs not covered, or only minimally covered, by our annual Town budget and the library expansion bond funds. The bond that funded the renovation and expansion of the library building does not cover funding for new library materials that are critically important in filling a building that will be increased in size by 130 percent.
Although the Foundation’s grant accomplishes much, it is only half of what is needed to fill the shelves. The other half – an additional $150,000 – must come from our library-loving community as the Foundation needs the public to match this grant dollar for dollar.
